I don’t know where Habib came from. And I certainly don’t know how he makes his music. He’s NOT the best, but I like what he creates. I’m not a die-hard fan, like I wouldn’t cough up the dough to catch a concert or anything. But there are only so few completely commercial projects in Bangladesh that you can listen to and enjoy. And sometimes, when you are abroad and alone…these songs can be shockingly beautiful. They make you feel good, remind you of your country and loved ones.
So it annoys me when people go around saying, “he can’t sing! he can’t sing!” Duh. I know very well that he can’t sing. But I don’t mind whatever it is that he does to his voice. Most don’t seem to mind either. People listen to these songs because they have nice lyrics and more so for the catchy tunes. I guess his voice has little to do with it.
Once a bunch of friends were addafying when the issue of Habib and his pink elephant came up. One of the party recounted a story he’d heard from his relative in Canada. Habib was there for one of his first concerts when the audience didn’t know that he didn’t sing his songs live.
Everyone was enjoying the concert, without a clue. Then some people got into a scuffle in the front row and began throwing chairs around. The commotion shocked everyone, and the artist himself was left tongue-tied on stage while the speakers wailed away to his song being played from track. Hehe. How embarrassing.
Anyway, the raconteur ended his story with, “he’s such a faako maaan!! I can’t believe people buy his shit!” I wonder why, then, his i-pod is full of Maya, Moina Go and Krishna songs!
Sucker. Such a hypocrite!
If you don’t think Habib is a good singer, or he is cheating the innocent people of the world, all you have to do is not listen to his music. Don’t buy his cds! Don’t download his songs! DON’T play din gelo at your holuds! The rest of us like being fooled by tech crap sometimes…

I think Habib rox! So does Lalon Shai. And personally, I would rather spend the day listening to Habib and Lalon than any band like Artcell nd those “pop” bands of Underground.
